Balancing the
Rear Light Clusters

December 20th 2002

Being a little picky, I never liked the look of having uneven light clusters in the back of the car with the fog and reversing lights sharing the same symmetrical location.

So I did this: -

So using the fogs is gonna piss someone off with a single white light in their face...I hear you cry!

Well this is a simple modification and red light is still emitted through the white lens.

Get a left hand drive - right hand side, rear cluster, you need the white lens, Mr Parts Guru came in very helpful for this.

Get a single filament replacement LED Stop light - Awsome or Speeding can get you these. (Thanks UK225 for the tips).

UPDATE:- www.ultraleds.co.uk do a much better bulb with side exit LEDs too!

Fitting:-
Open the side flap in the boot

Inside there are 2 knurled knobs top and bottom, they are near the flap opening on the inside....undo both of these.
Pull the cluster straight back away from the car, the outer edge is held by a ball joint which will pop out with a little effort.

It'll come out a few inches then disengage the wiring loom from its socket, just pull it off.

2 Philips screws hold the bulb holder onto the light cluster, remove the entire bulb holder and swap it across.

You can see from the tracks the bulb holders are identical as are the connecting pins....Its the wiring looms that must be different in LHD and RDH TT's. You could simple put the LED bulb into the cluster before doing this process and unplug the old, plug in the whole new unit.

Because I was playing safe I kept the old bulb holder and screwed it into the new light cluster (Thanks for the tip DXN).

Refit the bulb holder, connect the loom to the cluster, push in the ball joint and then re-fit the knurled knobs.

Stand back and admire your handy-work! :o)

Cost to do this is about £70 for a cluster and clear/red LED bulb.
